Memorials

Memorial rights are granted for the display of a memorial stone on the grave. Rights last for a period of 25 years after which they are renewable. The renewal of memorial rights in the future will provide an important contribution to the upkeep of the burial ground after income from the sale of rights of burial has ceased.

In keeping with the wild and natural character of the burial ground, memorial stones
need to be rustic in shape and laid flat to the ground. Local field or river stones are ideal - one that you have sourced and collected yourself or which your craftsman has identified on which the name and dates of the deceased are cut. Square cut or polished stones are not to be placed.

If you would like to place a memorial please download and complete a Memorial Application Form.

The stone should be laid flat to the ground and no larger than 30cm x 30cm (12 inches square). Letter cutting can be undertaken by a family member, local stonemason or memorial mason. In keeping with the natural setting, no paint should be used in the letters.

The woodland at Cothiemuir Hill will remain as a natural environment, the way you see it now. Unlike conventional cemeteries, there will not be memorial benches, vases of flowers or mementos which would change the special quality of the burial ground.

Tree Planting

We have a number of spaces where we can offer a place to plant a native tree at the natural burial ground in memory of someone special. New native trees will enhance the development of the extended woodland, improving biodiversity and encouraging more wildlife to visit.

New trees, selected from native varieties, can be planted in the bands of new tree planting that enclose the burial glades.

The price for planting a tree covers the selection of the tree, identification of the position for the tree, preparing the ground for the planting, a stake, tree-tie and guard, mulch around the base of the tree; beyond that it also covers the administration costs and maintenance for three years.

If you would like to plant a tree in memory of somebody please contact the estate office, complete a Tree Dedication Form and read our tree-planting information sheet.

If you wish to scatter ashes at the base of the tree you will also need to complete an Ashes Scattering Form.
